Home broadband routers are manufactured to use a default address such as 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.2.1. Verify your computer is connected to the router either via an Ethernet cable or wirelessly association with the router. In either case, ensure your computer possesses a valid IP address. See: What's My IP Address?

Open a Web browser window and request a connection to the router using its local IP address. For example, type http://192.168.1.1/ in the browser's address bar to request a connection to a router using the IP address 192.168.1.1.

If the browser request is successful, you will be connected to the router and prompted for the administrative login (username and password) information. Enter the administrative login information to authenticate yourself to use the router's admin screens. Broadband routers contain default usernames and passwords when first installed. Consult your router's documentation if you need to know the default login information.

The internal, LAN-IP address is normally set to a default, private number. Linksys routers, for example, use 192.168.1.1 for their internal IP address. D-Link and Netgear routers typically use 192.168.0.1. Some US Robotics routers use 192.168.123.254, and some SMC routers use 192.168.2.1. No matter the brand of router, its default internal IP address is listed in the manufacturer's documentation. Administrators have the option to change this IP address during router setup or at any time later. Unless someone manually changes it, however, this private LAN-IP address remains fixed. This address can be viewed and changed from the router's administrative console.

The external, WAN-IP address of the router is set when the router connects to the Internet service provider. This address can also be viewed on the router's administrative console. Alternatively, the WAN-IP address can be found by visiting a Web-based IP address lookup service like http://checkip.dyndns.org/ from any computer on the home LAN.

Another way to identify the public IP addresses of routers, involves executing a ping or traceroute command. From inside a home network, the (DOS) command "ping -r 1" will send a message through the home router that will cause its IP address to be displayed. For example, "ping -r 1 www.yahoo.com" should result in a message like the following displayed on the command prompt:

Router adalah perangkat jaringan yang digunakan untuk membagi protocol kepada anggota jaringan yang lainnya, dengan adanya router maka sebuah protocol dapat di-sharing kepada perangkat jaringan lain. Contoh aplikasinya adalah jika kita ingin membagi IP Adress kepada anggota jaringan maka kita dapat menggunakan router ini, ciri-ciri router adalah adanya fasilitas DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Procotol), dengan mensetting DHCP, maka kita dapat membagi IP Address, fasilitas lain dari Router adalah adanya NAT (Network Address Translator) yang dapat memungkinkan suatu IP Address atau koneksi internet disharing ke IP Address lain.
misalnya jika pada suatu perangkat jaringan (komputer) memiliki IP Adress 192.168.0.1, maka agar komputer lain dapat berkomunikasi, harus diberikan IP Address dengan Network Identification 192.168.0 dan dengan Host Identification 2-254, contoh 192.168.0.10, 192.168.0.11 dan seterusnya.
